The project will create an innovative food and education centre on a site at the back of the school. The project will use the Green Business Network’s project management expertise in growing fish and food.
Work is set to start this summer, with student involvement in the build during the next school year. It is hoped that the site will be completed for the start of term in September 2011. The Food Hub will grow fish and food in a sustainable re-circulatory system based on the GBN’s ABLE Project and will use polytunnels and raised beds to grow fresh produce which will then be sold to the school and local businesses. The Food Hub will also benefit Todmorden High School by opening up a whole new area of learning for the students with new courses such as the Diploma in Environmental and Land-Based Studies and NVQ qualifications which will be taught in the Hub. Pam Warhurst, chair of IET said: “IET has done a lot over the last couple of years to promote local food production, but at the heart of it all is the desire to give our children a better future, and what better way than this. It will become second nature for children to think about where their food comes from”. For more information visit www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk or www.theableproject.org.uk
